All of our students live with Parisian hosts to experience daily life in Paris and hone their conversational French skills. We have a variety of placements and you can choose to live with hosts who wish to welcome you as part of the family or hosts for whom you are more like a boarder. Either way you will have your own room, your own key, and will be treated as an independent adult. Most of our hosts have been with our program for many years and we place students only with hosts who have been highly rated by past participants. Breakfasts and most dinners are provided by your French hosts and Hollins Abroad provides a cash allowance for your remaining meals.
All students receive a pass for unlimited use of the metro and bus system to travel to and from class and field trips and to explore the city on your own.
The arrival programs are designed to help you get acquainted with your new environment, with each other, and with the director and faculty.
Upon arrival in September, the fall group goes on a four-day tour of Normandy as part of orientation. Destinations include Caen, Bayeux, the D-Day beaches, Deauville, Mont St Michel, Honfleur, and Rouen. In the spring, the group goes to southern France to visit Nice, Saint-Paul de Vence, les Baux de Provence, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Arles, and Avignon.
In both fall and spring, the arrival program in Paris includes guided visits within Paris (including the Louvre, Notre Dame, La Sainte Chapelle), and trips to Giverny, and Versailles.
Two additional guided weekend trips each term will take you to the chateaux of the Loire Valley, the magnificent architecture and wineries of Burgundy, or other areas of special interest.
To introduce you to the gastronomic pleasures of France, we offer an optional non-credit course in French culinary arts. You may visit a traditional French bakery, try your skills in a French cooking class, take a guided tour of gourmet shops and indoor and outdoor markets. You'll also enjoy a wine tasting session with experts who will share the cultural history of wine and wine regions and teach you the vocabulary of wine appreciation. There is an extra fee for this course.
