Hollins Steps Out of Conference Against Bluefield

Bluefield, VA - Hollins University Volleyball at Bluefield College, October 15, 2013

Box score

The Hollins University volleyball team looked to pick up a non-conference win as they traveled to face Bluefield College on Tuesday night.  After a home win over Bluefield State, Hollins had dropped three matches in a row and went looking to end that streak against the Rams.

In the opening set, neither team could gain much momentum as they traded points back and forth.  Late in the set it was the home standing Rams that pulled away and took the opener, 25-19.  The second set was played even closer than the first.  As the score mounted it was evident that the winner of the set was going to have to put up more than the usual 25 points.  Hollins dug deep and it was the visitors that tied the match at a set apiece when they came out with a hard fought 29-27 win.  For the third set in a row, the teams were close down the stretch but the final score ended in favor of Bluefield and they took a 2-1 lead into the fourth set.  A weary Hollins team was unable to push the match any further as they fell in the deciding set 25-16.

Bluefield College enjoyed a 49-34 advantage in kills led by Jasmine Morrow with a match high 22.  Sydney Spencer added six kills and a match high 40 assists.  Hannah Winter led the Rams with 16 digs.

Hollins will be back in ODAC action on Friday night when they travel to Randolph College.  The match with the WildCats is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.
