Hornets End Hollins Season

Winchester, VA - Hollins University Basketball at Shenandoah University, ODAC First Round, February 18, 2013

Box Score

Monday marked the start of the 2013 ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament.  Hollins started their quest for a title by traveling to Shenandoah University for a first round matchup.  The game marked the first time in a decade that Hollins had competed in the season ending tournament.

After falling behind to start the game, Hollins quickly answered to take their first lead of the evening.  The two teams would trade the lead four times during a first half that saw the home team lead by as many as nine and Hollins by as many as three.  Hollins found themselves down by six entering the final minutes of the first half and when the halftime buzzer sounded, Hollins trailed by just three.  Hollins came out in the second half looking to build on their momentum leading into the break but it was the home team that came out and seized control early.  The Hornets lead throughout the second half but with less than five minutes left to play Hollins had cut the lead to a single basket.  Hollins got the defensive stop they needed but couldn't secure the rebound and after a three point play, found themselves again down two scores.  Hollins would force four Shenandoah turnovers down the stretch but ran out of time as the Hornets held on for a 69-64 opening round victory.

The senior guard tandem of Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA) and Lacie Forrest (Richmond, VA) led the Hollins offensive attack on last time.  Greene finished with 24 points, six rebounds, and eight assists.  Forrest tallied 18 points, three rebounds, and two assists while going a perfect four for four from the free throw line.  Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) off the bench to add eight points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals.  Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) and Kelly Maxey (Leesburg, VA) each added four points while Wright grabbed a team high eight rebounds.

Three Hornets scored in double figures led by Holly Chittenden who recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.  Crystal Petrus scored 16 while Gabrielle Clarke came off the bench to add 14.  Post player Nicole Gilbertson and her nine rebounds helped Shenandoah enjoy a 42-30 edge on the glass.

Hollins will finish the season with a 9-17 mark.
