Hollins Opens Basketball Season at Dickinson

Carlisle, PA - Hollins University Basketball vs Widener University at Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Dickinson College, November 15, 2013

Box Score

The Hollins basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a trip to Dickinson College to compete in the Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament.  The two day, four team event started with the host Red Devils playing Hood before Hollins took the court in the night-cap against Widener University.

Hollins faced a tough task in their season opener by taking on a Pride team that earned a trip to the NCAA DIII National Tournament just one season ago.  A young Hollins team struggled early and fell behind from the opening tip.  Trailing by more than 20 points with less than five minutes to go, Hollins mounted a rally to cut the lead to 11 as the halftime horn sounded, 41-30.

After closing the first half on a 8-0 run, Hollins was hoping to carry the momentum into the second stanza.  However, Widener used a 17-4 run to open the half and built their largest lead or the game, 24.  Hollins righted the ship and played the Pride even for much of the next 10 minutes.  Trailing by 23 with seven minutes left to play, Hollins again went on a run and cut the lead to 13 with a little over three minutes left to play.  As the time slipped away so did Hollins chance at a comeback and when the clock hit 00:00 it was Widener who came away with the season opener, 72-62.

Both teams struggled from the field with Hollins shooting 27.5% while holding the Pride to 34.9%.  Senior forward Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) finished just one rebound short of a double-double by scoring 13 points to go with her nine rebounds.  Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) added nine points while Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) scored eight points and six rebounds.  First-year guard Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) scored the game's seven points to pull Hollins within 10 at the final buzzer.

Widener was paced by a trio of players with double figures.  Ally Ferrucci hit 10 of her 15 free throw attempts en route to 18 points.  Jen Egee also scored 18 points while pulling down a game high 10 rebounds.  Joanna Persiano added 13 points in just 24 minutes of play.

Hood fell to host Dickinson earlier in the night and will be the opponent for Hollins in tomorrow's consolation game.  Hollins will face off with the Blazers at 6:00pm Saturday night.
