Hollins No Match For Defending Champs

Greensboro, NC - Hollins University Basketball at Guilford College, January 14, 2014

Box Score

The Hollins basketball team went on the road in search of their first ODAC win of the season when they traveled to Guilford College on Tuesday night.  Hollins faced a tough challenge in their matchup with the reigning ODAC Champions, a team that was selected to finish second in the 2013-14 ODAC Women's Basketball Preseason Poll.

Hollins needed to get off to a quick start if they wanted any chance to upset the heavily favored Quakers.  After trading baskets to open the game, the home team grabbed the lead.  Hollins kept the score close with Guilford holding as high as a seven point lead during the opening minutes of the half.  At the midway point of the first half, the Quakers hit a three pointer to push their lead to double digits for the first time.  Hollins saw the lead start to grow and as the clock ticked down, Guilford pushed the lead to 20 points at the break.

The first five minutes of the second half were important if Hollins was going to have any chance of staying in the game.  Hollins played much better but the home team started to slowly pull away.  The young Hollins team could not overcome the huge advantage that Guilford enjoyed on the glass, 51-28.  The size and experience of the two time defending champs wore Hollins down and pulled away for the 78-38 ODAC win.

Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) came off the bench to lead Hollins with seven points.  Catron added two assist and a steal well fellow first-year guard Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) added six points, two rebounds, and a team high four assists.  Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) scored six points and just missed another double-digit rebound effort by pulling down nine boards.

Morgan King, 13 points and five rebounds, and Gabby Oglesby, 10 points and six rebounds, helped to lead a Guilford attack that saw four players in double figures.  Lila Scott came off the bench to score a game high 14 points while Brittany Drew added 10.

The schedule for Hollins doesn't get any easier as they travel to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon.  The Royals, picked to win the ODAC in the preseason, came to Roanoke during the first semester and beat Hollins, 103-45.  The rematch is scheduled to tip at 2:00pm in Harrisonburg.
