Hollins Falls To Nationally Ranked Yellow Jackets

Ashland, VA - Hollins University Basketball at Randolph-Macon College, December 7, 2013

Box Score

The Hollins University basketball team faced a tough task in their first ODAC road game of the season when they traveled to face 20th ranked Randolph-Macon College on Saturday afternoon.  The Yellow Jackets came into their matchup with Hollins having lost just once, to DI Virginia Union, while beating a pair of top 25 NCAA DIII opponents.

Hollins need a good start to stay with a Randolph Macon team that came in ranked fourth nationally in scoring, averaging over 90 points peg game.  After winning the opening tip, Hollins struck first and controlled the game during the opening minutes of play and about seven minutes into the half, Hollins enjoyed a 9-7 lead.  However a big 23-4 run by the Yellow Jackets put their visitors in a big hole at the midway point of the first half.  Hollins recovered for the big Macon run and played their hosts point for point until a late first half run made the score 56-24 at the break.

After taking the half to regroup, Hollins came out and played at a much higher level.  After the Yellow Jackets pushed the lead to as many as 49, Hollins began to take it to the home team and found it much easier to score.  18 offensive rebounds helped Hollins to cut into the large Randolph Macon lead and as the game drew to a close, Hollins went on a run of their own to make the final score 100-61.

For the second time in the last three games, Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) led Hollins in scoring.  Campbell netted 13 points to go with her three rebounds and two assists.  Senior Carrie Cox (Lynch Station, VA) joined Campbell in double figures with 10 points.  Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) off the bench to add eight points while Hollins leading scorers Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) and Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) added seven points apiece.  Wright also grabbed a game high nine rebounds, three on the offensive glass.

Sarah Parsons led five Yellow Jackets in double figures with a game high 24 points and five assists.  Stephanie Staples added 16 while Katie Anderson, Lindsay Sharman, and Lauren Vugteveen each scored 10.

Hollins will wrap up first semester play when they play host to Salem College on Tuesday night.  The game with the Spirits is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
