Hollins Can't Hold Off Roanoke

Salem, VA - Hollins University Basketball at Roanoke College, February 11, 2014

Box Score

Due to the forecasted inclement weather, the Hollins/Roanoke game was moved up a night from it's scheduled Wednesday time slot so Hollins traveled across town to face the Maroons on Tuesday night.  In an earlier matchup, it was Roanoke that came away with the non-conference win.  This time not only local bragging rights were on the line but win in the ODAC standings went to the victor.

Roanoke used their home court advantage to race out to an early lead.  After getting into the flow of the game, Hollins started to come back and the game was tied after five minutes of play.  From that point on, Hollins dominated play in the first half, building their lead to as many as nine during the first 20 minutes.  However, the Maroons put together a four point run to end the first half as Hollins carried a 38-33 lead into the break.

As the second half got started, Roanoke was not able to capitalize on their late momentum and Hollins once again began to build their lead.  Trailing by eight, Roanoke made another run and with 14:00 on the clock, the game was tied at 49-49.  Again Hollins found themselves in the lead as they controlled the game for the next six minutes.  With just over eight minutes left to play, Roanoke caught and passed Hollins to take their first lead since the games opening minutes.  Roanoke pushed the lead to five, but Hollins wasn't done.  A four point run by the visitors cut the Maroons lead to a single point.  Over the games final two minutes of play, Hollins could not retake the lead and fell to their cross town rivals, 76-71.
