ODAC Opener Goes to Eagles

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Bridgewater College, November 28, 2012

Box Score

Wednesday night marked the ODAC opener for the Hollins basketball team.  Bridgewater College came to town as both teams opened conference play after playing three season opening non-conference contests.  The Eagles came into the matchup winless in three tries while Hollins sported a 1-2 mark.  Hollins was selected seventh in the 12 team ODAC Preseason Poll and looked to upset the Eagles, picked fourth.

Hollins didn't get off to the start they were looking for as Bridgewater raced out to an early lead.  Finding themselves down 12, Hollins came back with six straight points to cut the lead in half.  After another Bridgewater surge, Hollins again found themselves on the short end of a double digit lead.  The home team again went on a run to trim the lead but 14 turnovers and 25% shooting would see Hollins down 15 at the break.  Hollins went on an eight to two run to start the second half but despite playing much better, couldn't get any closer and eventually fell to the Eagles 75-50.

Senior Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA) came into the game averaging a team high 16 points.  Greene once again led Hollins with 17 points, five assists and five steals.  First-year guard Mackenzie Miller (Spencerville, OH) came off the bench and went three for five from behind the arch en route to 11 points.  Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) added eight points and a team high 10 rebounds and Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) scored five.  Despite grabbing 13 offensive rebounds, Hollins was still out-rebounded by Bridgewater, 41-33.

Reigning ODAC scoring champ Jessica Mullen scored a game high 20 points and four steals.  Shannan Thorne added 10 points and five rebounds while fellow post player Katelynn Hottinger scored five points to go with her game high 11 rebounds.  Holly Morgan and first-year guard Cassidy Burkholder each scored nine points.

Hollins will travel to perennial ODAC power Randolph-Macon on Saturday.  The game with the Yellow Jackets is scheduled to tip at 2:00pm.
