Falcons No Match For The Green and Gold

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Cedar Crest College, January 4, 2014

Box Score

Less than 48 hours after hosting cross town rival Roanoke College, the Hollins basketball team was back defending home turf by hosting Cedar Crest College on Saturday afternoon.  After falling to the Maroons to start 2014, Hollins looked to get into the win column against the Falcons.

Hollins looked to get off to a quick start against their visitors from Allentown.  The home team struck first scoring the first hoop of the afternoon but Cedar Crest answered with a three pointer to take their only lead of the game.  After Hollins retook the lead they slowly built their advantage to double digits just over midway through the first frame.  The Hollins defense was stifling as they held the Falcons to just 18% shooting in the first half.  As the halftime horn sounded, Hollins had built a 33-16 lead.

Hollins continued their stellar defensive play in the opening minutes of the second half.  after 10 minutes of the second stanza, Hollins had built their lead to 30 points.  After allowing just 16 first half points to Cedar Crest, Hollins played even better in the second half holding the Falcons to 14 points.  As the clock ticked down towards :00, Hollins never allowed their visitors to get anything going and came away with a 62-30 non-conference victory.

First-year shooting guard Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) led Hollins in scoring for the second consecutive game.  Parfitt filled up the score sheet with 13 points, three rebounds, five assists and six steals.  Senior Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while fellow post player Ella Oakley (Primrose Valley, NSW) added eight points, nine rebounds, four assists, and a pair of blocked shots.  Hollins used their size advantage in besting the Falcons, 54-31, on the glass.  Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) and Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) each scored six points while Kaitlyn Taylor (Gastonia, NC) came off the bench to add five points and six rebounds.

Cedar Crest got 10 points and seven rebounds from Amber Wehry.  Taylor Osley scored eight and Breonna Lewis added eight points and six rebounds.  The Falcons shot just 21.1% for the game and only got scoring from four different players.

Hollins will conclude their three game home stand on Monday when they host Southern Virginia University.  The matchup with the Knights is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.
