Hollins Struggles Against ODAC's Best

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Eastern Mennonite University, November 23, 2013

Box Score

Hollins started ODAC play on Saturday afternoon when they played host to Eastern Mennonite University.  After winning two of their first three games, a young Hollins squad would face their toughest competition to date against the ODAC preseason favorite Royals.

Hollins won the opening tip but it was Eastern Mennonite that scored first.  Hollins hit a three pointer to make the score 3-4 just two minutes into the game.  However, over the next 10 minutes of play the Royals used relentless defensive pressure to keep Hollins on their heels as the visitors enjoyed a 20-0 run.  Hollins regained their composure but as the turnovers mounted, 21 giveaways in the first half, the game seemed to be slipping further out of reach.  By the time the halftime horn sounded, Eastern Mennonite had built a 53-18 lead.

During the early stages of the second half, Hollins played much better on the offensive end.  Scoring on several of their half court sets and doing a better job taking care of the basketball, Hollins played the Royals even for the first part of the half.  After having 10 players score six points or more, Eastern Mennonite cruised to the ODAC opening win, 103-45.

First-year guard Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) enjoyed a solid all around performance in her first collegiate start.  Catron led Hollins with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, and four steals.  Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) battled foul trouble all afternoon in posting seven points and five rebounds.  Morgan Hufford (Fincastle, VA) and Ella Oakley (Primrose Valley, NSW) scored six points apiece while Erin Staunton (Oak Ridge, NC) added four.

2013 All ODAC first teamer Bianca Ygarza and Roanoke native Keke Haynes each scored a game high 15 points to lead the Royals.  Marla zumFelde hit four of eight from long range en route to 13 points while Jess Rheinheimer and Kayla Baltimore added nine points apiece.

Hollins will look to rebound on Tuesday night when they play host to Randolph College at 7:00pm.
