Hollins Claims Home Finale In Thrilling Fashion

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Emory & Henry College, February 19, 2014

Box Score

The Hollins basketball team defended their home court for the final time this season on Wednesday night when they played host to Emory & Henry College.  The Wasps won the first matchup back on January 29th and Hollins was looking for redemption in their final home ODAC game of the year.

Hollins won the opening tip and scored to take the early lead.  From that moment on, Hollins controlled play during a first half that never saw the home team trail.  After racing out to a 6-0 lead, Hollins traded baskets with their visitors over much of the first part of the opening frame.  At the midway point, the Wasps had cut the Hollins lead to a single basket.  From that point on Hollins began to stretch out their advantage and as the half entered its final minute,  Hollins had pushed their lead to 15 points.  Two Hollins turnovers and a foul allowed Emory & Henry to cut the lead to 11 going into the break.

Hollins entered the second half looking to regain the momentum that they had lost in the closing minute of the first.  Hollins did exactly that, scoring the first basket of the half and again started to build on their lead.  Hollins built their lead to 15 over the opening minutes of the second stanza and every time the Wasps would cut into the lead, Hollins would pull away and keep their guests at bay.  However, foul trouble started to mount for the Hollins backcourt and as the turnovers began to mount, the lead continued to shrink.  Emory & Henry finally cut the Hollins advantage to less than 10 points with just under seven minutes left on the clock.  Possession by possession the Wasps continued to inch closer until they had come all the way back.  With just over 35 seconds left to play, the game was tied at 66-66.  After a failed shot, Hollins was able to track down the rebound and had the ball with 13 ticks left on the clock.  Coming out of a timeout, Hollins had set up an out of bounds play that allowed Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) a clean look at a three pointer.  The first year guard promptly swished the long range shot to give Hollins a three point lead with 10 seconds left to play.  After a failed attempted to tie the game landed in the hands of Racheal Crowder (Buena Vista, VA), the game was all but over.  Crowder drained a pair of free throws making the final score 71-66 in favor of the home team.

Jewell Parfitt for three

Parfitt finished the game with 15 points. four rebounds, and three assists.  Senior post player Brandi Chesne (Hammond, LA) led Hollins with 18 points.  Chesne, playing in her final home game, went eight of 12 from the field while adding five rebounds.  Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) went a perfect four of four from the free throw line en route to 12 points and four assists.  The ODAC's leading rebounder Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) added to her season total by grabbing a game high 15 rebounds while fellow senior Carrie Cox (Lynch Station, VA) handed out a team high five assists.

Tenesha Conner came off the bench to led the Wasps with 15 points and four steals.  Kristie Langley scored nine first half points to keep Emory & Henry in the game.  Megan Jacoby posted a solid all around game with seven points, four rebounds, six assists, and five steals.

Hollins will wrap up regular season play with a trip to Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon.  Hollins will tip with the Eagles at 2:00pm.
