Hollins Can't Overcome Turnovers

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Lynchburg College, January 23, 2013

Box Score

The Hollins University basketball team faced off with ODAC rival Lynchburg College on Wednesday night.  Hollins came into the matchup with the Hornets looking to move up the ODAC standings.  Lynchburg defeated Hollins back in December and home team was looking to return the favor to their visitors from the East.

The game started as a back and forth affair with two lead changes and four ties in the first five minutes of play.  The Hornets seized control a minute later and held a four to five point lead until Hollins cut the Hornet advantage to a single point with four minutes left in the first half.  The Hornets took advantage of 14 Hollins first half turnovers and enjoyed a seven point lead a the break.  The visitors built the lead to as many as 14 during the first part of the second frame until Hollins went on a big run and cut the lead to a basket with less than eight minutes left in the contest.  Hollins could get no closer as they just couldn't overcome 25 turnovers and fell to the Hornets, 62-52.

Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA), the ODAC's leading scorer, paced Hollins with 24 points including a perfect nine of nine from the free throw line. Greene also handed out a game high six assists.  Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) scored just five points but kept Hollins close all night by grabbing a game high 14 rebounds.  Wright came into the game averaging 9.1 rebounds per game and has pulled down 30 boards in the past two games.  First-year post player Ella Oakley (Queanbeyan, AU) added 10 points and eight rebounds as Hollins enjoyed a 47-37 advantage on the boards.

Shannon Allan, who sits just behind Greene on the ODAC scoring list, hit on 10 of her 20 shots en route to 24 points.  Sammi Goldsmith scoured 13 points while Lauren Penley recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Hollins will play the first of three straight road games on Saturday with a trip to face Randolph College.  The game with the WlidCats is scheduled to tip at 2:00pm.
