Hollins Rally Falls Short

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Lynchburg College, January 22, 2014

Box Score

For the third consecutive game, the Hollins basketball team faced one of the top three ODAC preseason selections.  Lynchburg College was selected third in the 2014 ODAC Women's Basketball Preseason Poll and came into the matchup with Hollins tied atop the conference standings.

Hollins got off to the quick start they were looking for.  The home team raced out to a 4-1 lead and maintained their advantage for the first five minutes of play.  Lynchburg slowly chipped away at the Hollins lead until they took their first lead of the evening at the midway point of the first half.  Foul trouble and untimely turnovers hurt Hollins as the Hornets began to build the lead.  As the half came to a close, the visitors pushed their lead to as many as 18 points en route to taking a 15 point advantage into the break.

Hollins hit a three pointer to start the second half as the home team started to close the gap.  With 11 minutes left in the game, Hollins had cut the Lynchburg halftime advantage in half, trailing by by just seven points.  A quick 9-2 spurt by the Hornets pushed the lead back over double digits.  Lynchburg continued their run, gaining as much as a 24 point cushion before Hollins started to come back.  Hollins scored 11 of the games final 13 points but it wasn't enough as Lynchburg held on for a 65-50 conference victory.

Senior forward Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) recorded a double-double by posting 13 points and a game high 15 rebounds.  Wright and her five offensive rebounds helped Hollins to 12 second chance points.  Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) added 12 points and five rebounds while fellow first-year guard Taylor Catron scored nine points and handed out a team high four assists.  Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) came off the bench to net five points and three steals.  Campbell and Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) each recorded six rebounds as Hollins enjoyed a 47-43 advantage on the glass.

Rocky Mount native Charmaine Hairston came off the Lynchburg bench to score a game high 21 points.  Guard Ann Dorris added 13 points as the Hornets outscored Hollins 41-9 off the bench.  Chaney Forbush had eight points and eight rebounds while leading scorer Shannon Allan added seven points and seven rebounds.

Hollins will continue with their ODAC schedule when they play host to Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon.  The game with the Marlins will tip at 2:00pm.
