Hollins Rolls in Home Opener

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Mary Baldwin College, November 19, 2013

Box Score

The Hollins University basketball team returned home after a 1-1 start at the Dickinson College tip-off tournament.  Hollins played host to Mary Baldwin College in first of 14 home games this season and as their last chance to get ready for their ODAC opener this coming Saturday afternoon.

Hollins looked to build on the momentum they gained with their win over Hood College on Saturday night and take advantage of a Mary Baldwin squad playing their third straight road game.  Hollins got the start they were looking for when they took the opening tip and scored the games first points.  Despite struggling from the field, shooting just 18% over the first 12 minutes of play, Hollins was able to build an eight point lead.  Over the final minutes of the first half, the home team picked it up on the offensive end of the floor and built their lead to double-digits.  The Fighting Squirrels made several free throws late in the half but it was Hollins that enjoyed a 16 point lead at the break.

As the second half started, Hollins used their decided height advantage to score several quick interior baskets to push the lead to 20 points.  However, Mary Baldwin was able to stop the Hollins run and go on a scoring binge of their own and after 10 minutes the lead was still at 16 points.  As the fouls started to mount against the thin benched Squirrels, Hollins opened up the lead and began to pull away.  Hollins saw 12 different players score en route to a home opening 72-50 win over their visitors from Staunton.

Reigning Hollins Student Athlete of the Week, Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) battled foul trouble throughout much of the first half on her way to a game high 18 points.  Wright hit on seven of her nine shots from the field while adding seven rebounds, one assists, and a steal.  Fellow senior post player, Brandi Chesne (New Orleans, LA) came off the bench to score nine points and grab a team high nine rebounds in just 14 minutes of play.  Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) and Ella Oakley (Primrose Valley, NSW) added eight points apiece and Auburn Smith (LAs Vegas, NV) tallied seven.  Senior guard Carrie Cox (Lynch Station, VA) scored two points and four rebounds all while handing out a game high eight assists.  Hollins used a 59-28 advantage on the glass, including 27 offensive rebounds, to help off-set their poor early game shooting and rallied to shoot 39.4% for the game.

Shanice Miles led Mary Baldwin with 16 points and seven rebounds.  Imani Hill battled foul trouble to add eight points while Precious Parker hit five of six free throws in scoring nine points.

Hollins will open conference play at home on Saturday afternoon.  ODAC preseason top ranked Eastern Mennonite will be the opponent for the 2:00pm tip.
