Angels Hold Off Hollins

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Meredith College, December 3, 2013

Box Score

For the first time in a week, the Hollins basketball team was in action when they played host to Meredith College in a non-conference match up.  It was a rematch from last season when the Angels defeated Hollins in Raleigh.

Hollins looked to get off to a quick start against their visitors from the south.  However it was Meredith that took initial control of the game.  Hollins kept the Angels within striking distance but every time the home team got close, Meredith was again able to pull away.  With less than seven minutes to play in the first half, Hollins found themselves down by 10 points.  However, the home team continued to rally and pulled even at 23-23 with less than two minutes to go before the break.  Both teams were able to get good looks in the closing seconds and it was the visitors that enjoyed a 25-23 lead at the half.

The second half saw Meredith race out to a 11 point lead in the opening minutes of play.  Hollins wouldn't let the Angels get away and at the midway point of the second frame, cut the lead to three. Meredith used a huge advantage at the free throw line, 14-17 in the second half, to keep Hollins from completing the comeback and at the final horn it was the Angels that came away with the 66-53 win.

First-year guard Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) Led the Hollins attack by scoring 16 points to go with her team high six rebounds and four assists.  Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) came off the bench to spark Hollins with 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals.  Carrie Cox (Lynch Station, VA), Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD), and Ella Oakley (Primrose Valley, NSW) added six points each while Morgan Hufford (Fincastle, VA) scored five points and handed out four assists.

McKenzi Edwards was held below her 17 point per game average but still scored a team high 14 points.  Nicole Miller came off the bench to add 10 points while fellow reserve Tyler Greshem scored nine.

Hollins will be back in ODAC action this Saturday when they go on the road for the first time in league play.  Hollins travels to Randolph-Macon for a 2:00pm tip.
