Hollins Falls To Cross Town Rival

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Roanoke College, January 2, 2014

Box Score

The Hollins basketball team kicked off the new year by playing host to their cross-town rivals from Roanoke College.  Hollins and Roanoke faced off in the first of two meetings this season, however due to ODAC scheduling tonight' game did not count in the conference standings.  Both teams are coming into the new year looking to break long losing streaks, with each team winning a pair of games during first semester.

Roanoke struck first hitting a three pointer to start the game.  After Hollins answered with a free throw and a bucket to tie the score.  The Maroons then rattled off six straight points and appeared poised to get a big lead early.  However, the home team dug in and kept their visitors from pulling away.  Roanoke enjoyed a lead as large as 12 during a half that saw the Maroons dominate the offensive glass, grabbing 10 offensive rebounds.  Hollins cut the lead to seven but a late stop and score by Roanoke allowed the Maroons to enjoy an 11 point lead at the break.

Hollins got the start they were looking for to start the second frame when they got a score and a stop to cut the lead to eight.  Turnovers really hurt Hollins in the first half, giving the ball away 17 times, and they again led to a big Roanoke run throughout the middle stages of the second half.  After a 25-3 Maroon run the defect for Hollins reached 30.  Over the final seven minutes of play Hollins took care of the ball and got the stops they needed to cut the Maroons lead in half by the final buzzer.  Roanoke came the six miles north on Interstate 81 and came away with a 72-56 non-conference victory.

Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) and Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) led Hollins with 14 points apiece.  Parfitt added six rebounds, four steals, and two blocked shots while Campbell recorded four rebounds, four assists, and a block.  Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) scored 11 points while grabbing seven rebounds and handing out three assists.  Leading scorer and rebounder Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) had another double digit rebound effort by pulling down a game high 12 rebounds to go with her eight points.  Hollins won the battle on the boards, 43-37, but couldn't overcome their 34 turnovers.

Paxton Gwin had to sit much of the first half with three fouls but that didn't stop the Maroons leading scorer from putting up a game high 16 points.  Tatum McKee added 11 points and six rebounds while senior Laurel Hankins posted 10 points and three steals.

Hollins will have little time to regroup as they face out of conference opponent Cedar Crest on Saturday.  the game with the Falcons is scheduled to tip at noon instead of the normal 2:00pm Saturday afternoon start.
