Hollins Falls in Closing Seconds

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Roanoke College, February 13, 2013

Box Score

Wednesday night marked the final home regular season game for Hollins as they hosted cross-town rival Roanoke College.  The Maroons won the first matchup between the two teams when they bested Hollins by 12 points in early January.  Hollins came into the game sitting just one game behind Roanoke in the ODAC standings.

Hollins drew first blood when they scored off the opening tip.  After Roanoke responded, Hollins began to pull away and after seven minutes of play the home team took their largest lead of the half, eight points.  The Maroons wouldn't let Hollins push the lead any further and after a 8-0 run, the game was tied at 17-17.  Hollins was able to re-take the lead and when the halftime buzzer sounded, Hollins found themselves holding a three point lead.  Roanoke came out in the second half and behind a pair of back to back three pointers took the lead.  The Maroons built their lead to as many as seven before Hollins mounted a comeback.  Hollins came all the way back and took a one point lead heading into the final seven minutes of play.  The two teams traded the lead back and forth until Hollins took the lead with two minutes left to play.  Hollins hit several big shots and with just 16 seconds left to play they found themselves with a four point lead.  Roanoke pushed the ball up the floor and nailed a three pointer.  After a quick Roanoke foul, Hollins went to the free throw line with the lead and just 11 ticks left on the clock.  After a pair of missed free throws, the Maroons pushed the ball up the floor and attacked the basket.  Hollins reached in and committed a foul with 3.9 seconds left.  The Roanoke shooter stepped to the line and calmly drained a pair of shots to re-take the lead.  Hollins had a perfect play set up but the long cross court pass missed the wide open Hollins player and sailed out of bounds as Hollins saw their bid at the upset slip away.  Roanoke held on to win a thrilling 67-65 game.

Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA) scored a game high 27 points while pulling down eight rebounds and handing out five assists.  Lacie Forrest (Richmond, VA), coming off her best game of the season on Monday night, added 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals.  Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) scored 10 points with five rebounds while fellow post player Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) added six points and eight rebounds.

Paxton Gwin led the Maroons with 22 points and seven rebounds.  Rachel Dellehunt scored 14 points, none bigger than what proved to be the game winning free throws in the final seconds.  Kelsey Smith hit the three pointer to give Roanoke life late, ende3d with 10 points.

Hollins will finish regular season play with a trip to ODAC leading Eastern Mennonite on Saturday.  The game with the Royals is scheduled to tip at 2:00pm.
