Two In A Row For Hollins

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Southern Virginia University, January 6, 2014

Box Score

The Hollins University basketball team came into their matchup with Southern Virginia looking for back to back home wins for the first time this season.  After besting Cedar Crest College on Saturday, Hollins played host to a Knight team that played just one time in the past 30 days.

Hollins needed a good start against the fresh Southern Virginia squad but it was the visitors that took the games initial lead.  Hollins responded and built a 12-7 lead and appeared ready to put some distance between themselves and the Knights.  However, SVU went on a 9-0 run to take a four point lead at the midway point of the first half.  Hollins rallied with a quick 4-0 run to tie the game at 16-16.  Hollins re-took the lead and held it over the last nine minutes of play and took a slim, 27-25 halftime lead.

Hollins came out in the second half and turned up the defensive pressure.  Better offensive execution and converting turnovers to easy points allowed the Green and Gold to build a double-digit lead just five minutes into the second frame.  Hollins kept the pressure on and began to stretch the lead and as the game entered its final minutes of play, Hollins had pulled out to a 23 point advantage.  The Knights scored the games final nine points but it wasn't near enough as Hollins grabbed a two game home win streak on the back of a 58-44 non-conference win.

Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) led a balanced Hollins attack that saw three different starters score double figures.  Campbell recorded a game high 15 points and four steals.  For the third game in a row, Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) posted a solid all around game.  Parfitt, the reigning Hollins Student Athlete of the Week, recorded 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.  Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) added 14 points and five rebounds while Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) scored eight points and grabbed a team high eight rebounds.

Crystal Cleveland led the Knights with 10 points and seven rebounds.  Paige Crittendon came off the bench to post nine points while starting guards Tatiana Monsen and Mckell Lajeunesse each added seven.

Hollins will travel to Washington and Lee on Wednesday in search of a third consecutive non-conference victory.  Due to the unbalanced schedule the meeting with the Generals will not count in the ODAC standings.  Hollins/W&L will tip at 5:30pm.
