Hollins Completes Season Sweep Of Generals

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Washington and Lee University, February 1, 2014

Box Score

Saturday afternoon saw several streaks on the line as Washington and Lee visited Hollins for an ODAC matchup.  After winning a non-conference battle in Lexington earlier this season, Hollins came into the matchup with the Generals looking for their sixth straight win over their conference rivals.  Washington and Lee has yet to win a road game this season while Hollins was still searching for their first ODAC win of the season.

Hollins scored the first two baskets of the game to take an early advantage.  Hollins continued to hold the lead throughout the opening stages but as the half entered its midway point, Washington and Lee battled back to tie the game.  Undeterred by their visitors comeback, Hollins opened up their largest lead of the half, seven points.  The Generals hit a couple of baskets down the stretch but Hollins entered the break with a four point lead, 32-28.

Washington and Lee got a quick start to the second half, scoring the first five points after the break.  Hollins traded baskets with the Generals before hitting a three pointer to once again tie the score.  Over the next nine minutes of play, the two teams traded the lead back and forth and with 6:50 left to play, the game was tied for the ninth time.  An eight point run by the home team saw the Hollins lead grow to 63-55 with just over three minutes left on the clock.  The Generals had one last run left in them as the visitors cut the lead to just a single point with 20 second remaining in the game.  As the clock ticked towards 00:00, Washington and Lee got a drive to the basket in what appeared to be a lead-taking hoop.  Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) stepped over to stop the General drive and drew a charge to help Hollins keep the lead.  After a Hollins made free throw, Washington and Lee had one more chance but the shot went just wide as the final buzzer sounded.  When all the dust had settled it was Hollins that came out with a much needed ODAC victory, 66-64.

Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) recorded her second double-double in as many games.  The first year guard led Hollins with 17 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and two blocked shots.  Wright added 14 points and eight rebounds while fellow senior post player Brandi Chesne (New Orleans, LA) came off the bench to post 13 points and four boards.  Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) had 11 points and four assists despite having to sit a majority of the first half with foul trouble.

Point guard Annie Gauf posted a career high 21 points to lead Washington and Lee.  Jackie Clifford also scored in double digits by netting 10 points.  Wesleigh Vick had eight points and 12 rebounds while Paige Corvino added seven points and 11 rebounds.  The Generals never let Hollins pull away by hitting 21 of their 22 free attempts.

Hollins will look to build on their momentum on Wednesday night when they travel to face Randolph College.  Hollins fell to the WildCats, 73-90, back in November.
