Hollins Takes Third in Finale

Fayetteville, NC - Hollins University Golf at Methodist Spring Invitational April 15, 2012

Results

Hollins hit the links for the final time this season when they traveled to compete in the Methodist University Spring Invitational.  Hollins has had a great spring and a trip to compete with some of the south regions best was to be the final time the team had to impress the top 25 voters.  Hollins was one of six teams to compete in the two day event.

After day one, Hollins found themselves in second place, trailing only national power Methodist.  On a day where scoring was tough to come by, Hollins battled hard in day two but Piedmont College shot "lights out" to catch Hollins and move into the runner up slot.  Hollins finished third in their final event the 2012 spring season.

First-year golfer Coty Hudson (Lynchburg, VA) shot an opening round 80 and found herself in sixth place after the first day.  Hollins as a team shot 354 and held a three shot lead over Piedmont College.  Elizabeth Cheng (Virginia Beach, VA) landed in 10th place after an opening round 83 and came back in day two with an 85 to finish the event in 10th out of 41 golfers.  Hudson couldn't duplicate her first round score but played well and landed in the 14th spot.  Senior JR Woolwine (Fairfax, VA), competing for Hollins for the final time, carded a team best 82 in the finale to give Hollins three golfers in the top 15.  Coming off her career best at Piedmont College, Gabby Rader (San Antonio, TX) finished in 38th.

Hollins completed their spring season by finishing in the top half of every event in which they competed.  They shot a modern day Hollins record of 323 and had at least one individual finish in the top 10 of every tournament.  Woolwine will graduate in May but with three golfers returning, Hollins will look to build on the solid season when they take to the course next fall.
