Annual Showdown Goes To Vixens

Sweet Briar, VA - Hollins University Lacrosse at Sweet Briar College, March 31, 2014

Box Score

A sunny Monday afternoon served as the backdrop for the annual lacrosse showdown between Hollins and Sweet Briar.  The Vixens hosted their ODAC rivals on the same afternoon that they celebrated 100 years of lacrosse at the central Virginia college.  The game was scheduled for earlier in the month but wet, snowy weather forced the game to be moved to the final day of the month.

Both teams came into the matchup looking for their first ODAC win of the season.  It was the home team that took control early, scoring three goals in the opening 10 minutes of play.  Hollins looked to respond but the Vixen defense continued to turn back the Hollins attack.  Sweet Briar added five more goals before Hollins finally got on the board.  Hollins took advantage of a Sweet Briar penalty and scored on the power play.  However, the Hollins momentum was quickly squashed as a pair of late Sweet Briar goals gave the home team a 10-1 halftime lead.

Neither team could crack the others defense as the clock hit the midway point of the second half.  Hollins once again gained the offensive zone and was able to beat the Sweet Briar defense to cut the lead to eight.  Once again the Vixens answered the Hollins goal with a tally of their own less than 30 seconds later.  Hollins could get no closer and as the final horn sounded it was Sweet Briar with the much needed ODAC win, 15-2.

Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) added to her team leading total by adding one goal on her lone shot of the game.  Hollins first goal of the match was scored on a free position shot by Erin Staunton (Oak Ridge, NC), her first goal of the season.  Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) and Kelly Maxey (Leesburg, VA) each picked up three ground balls while Martinez added two.  Madie Horton (Irvine, CA) got the nod in net for Hollins, recording six saves.

Allison McLamb, four goals, led a Sweet Briar attack that saw eight different players score.  Allison Hassard added three goals as Reba Gagne and Kelsey Barta scored two goals apiece.  Kim Orchowski handed out nine assists and Dayze Gaulin added one helper.  Emily Williams and Ashton Reid split time in net, each giving up one goal.

Hollins will celebrate "senior day" on Saturday when Virginia Wesleyan comes to town for a 2:00pm start.
