Hollins Kicks Off 2014 Lax Season

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Lacrosse vs Southern Virginia University, March 1, 2014

Box Score

The Hollins University lacrosse team welcomed in the new season by playing host to Southern Virginia University on a cool, overcast Saturday afternoon.  The game was the season opener for Hollins while the Knights came in after falling to Methodist University, 8-5.

Hollins took the field with a young, inexperienced squad and looked to gain some much needed seasoning against a Southern Virginia team playing in the NCAA DIII for the first time this season.  The two teams took their time getting to know one another as neither team would score over the game's first 10 minutes of play.  With the game scoreless, it was Southern Virginia that got on the scoreboard first by finding the back of the Hollins net at the 19:30 mark of the first half.  The Hollins defense wouldn't allow the Knights to build any momentum and the score remained at 1-0 for the next 10 minutes of action.  However, the game started to open up as four goals were scored during a three minute stretch.  After a pair of goals by the visitor, Hollins netted their first tally of the season.  One final Knight goal gave Southern Virginia a 4-1 lead at the break.

The second frame started with a much different flurry of activity than that of the game's beginning minutes.  Southern Virginia came out and quickly seized control of the matchup by adding four goals to their lead over the first 10 minutes of the second half.  Southern Virginia continued to lead throughout and did not allow Hollins to get anything going on the offensive end of the field.  One last SVU goal in the games closing seconds sealed the game as the visitors traveled to Roanoke and went home with a 9-1 victory.

Sophomore midfielder Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) provided the Hollins offense by scoring a goal on one of her two shots.  Brandi Chesne (New Orleans, LA) added three shots but was unable to find the back of the Knights net.  Maddie Horton (Irvine, CA) got her first start in net and recorded eight saves.

Caroline Schroeder and Rainey Whitworth led the Southern Virginia attack by scoring three goals apiece.  Zoe Bradshaw, Kristen Kessler, and Skye Lowry added one goal each while Shanteya Holder and Ashley Ahlgren each picked up an assist.  Kathryn Lyman picked up her first win of the season in net, stopping a pair of Hollins shots.

The schedule doesn't get any easier for Hollins as they play host to ODAC power Washington and Lee on Tuesday afternoon.  The game with the Generals is scheduled to start at 4:00pm.
