Finale Unkind to Hollins |
Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Soccer vs Eastern Mennonite University October 25, 2011 Hollins took the field for the final time this season when they hosted Eastern Mennonite University on Tuesday afternoon. After going 2-0 in ODAC play last week, Hollins was looking to win three ODAC games in a row for the first time. Both teams came into the match-up with identical ODAC marks but the visitors struck first when they scored 12 minutes into the game. 10 minutes later the Royals built the lead to two as Hollins struggled to find their way during the first half. The second half started with Hollins down two until the Royals sent a long, high shot that went over the keepers head and into the back of the net. Hollins didn't quit and with less than 10 minutes left in the game they scored on a beautiful tic-tac-toe pass that found the back of the open net. The joy was short lived as EMU scored on a corner kick less than two minutes later to make the final score 4-1. Dani Franklin (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Northern) was the beneficiary of a perfect Hollins attack. Hollins sent the ball down the left sideline as first-year forward Kelli Kitchens (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) attacked the Royal defense and sent a perfect pass to Sarah Knox (Bedford, VA/Jefferson Forest) who made a touch around the keeper to a wide open Franklin who blasted it home. Senior keeper Norkus (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield), making her final appearance in net, recorded six saves. Eastern Mennonite was led by Taylor Wenger and her two goals. Wenger scored the first goal of the game and assisted on what proved to be the game winner. Amber Shelly and Sarah Carpenter also scored for the Royals. Hollins ended the 2011 campaign with a 2-9 ODAC mark. |
