Overtime Heartbreak for Hollins

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Soccer vs Emory & Henry College, September 26, 2012

Box Score

On a beautiful Wednesday afternoon Hollins hosted Emory & Henry looking for their first ODAC win of the season.  Hollins was finishing a three game home stand by hosting a Wasp team that was just sitting one game ahead of Hollins in the ODAC standings.

Hollins started the match on the defensive while the visitors controlled play for the first part of the contest.  Emory & Henry broke through and took the lead about 20 minutes into the match.  Five minutes later Hollins found an answer to tie the match and stop the Wasps for opening up the lead.  Emory & Henry was able to retake the lead and took a one goal advantage into the break.  The lead didn't last long as Hollins gained the momentum by scoring the tying goal just 21 seconds into the second frame.  Less than 10 minutes later Hollins took the lead for the first time and looked to add to their lead but a great stop by the Wasp keeper kept the Hollins lead at one goal.  The lead was short lived as the visitors scored two goals in a five minute stretch to retake the lead.  Hollins wasn't done and scored their fourth goal of the afternoon with less than 10 minutes to play.  Neither team could win the match in regulation and the teams went into overtime 4-4.  Less than five minutes into the first overtime the visitors from Emory sealed the win with a high arching shot that found the back of the Hollins net.

Maran O'Neill (Bedford, VA) scored a pair of goals, her second sending the match into overtime.  Becca Logan (Culloden, WV) scored Hollins first goal of the afternoon and Morgan Wood (Rocky Mount, VA) scored in the second half to give Hollins their only lead of the match.  Dani Franklin (Chesapeake Beach, MD) handed out a pair of assists while Kelly Hunt (Broadlands, VA) and Alicia Johns (Locust Grove, VA) each added a helper.  ODAC save leading goalkeeper Brandi Chesne (Hammond, LA) added 16 more saves to her season total.

Emory & Henry got three goals from Emily Belanger, including the match winner.  Erica Merriman and Sarah Gorenflo also scored for the Wasps.

Hollins will travel to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday for a matchup with the Royals that will begin at 7:00pm.
