Lions Tame Hollins |
Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Soccer vs Piedmont College September 11, 2011 After having their home opener postponed by the weather last week, Hollins hosted Piedmont College on Sunday afternoon. The Lions traveled from Georgia to face a pair of ODAC foes, defeating Sweet Briar yesterday afternoon. Defense was the name of the game early as neither team could get much going. With less than 15 minutes remaining in the first half, the Lions took a corner kick and after a scrum in front of the net were able to get a shot past the Hollins keeper to take the lead. Late in the first half Piedmont took a long, high shot that floated over the Hollins defense and somehow found the back of the net. Hollins was able to get their breath during the break but could not beat the Piedmont defense and fell 2-0. Hollins was outshot 29-9 but the Hollins defense only allowed 10 shots to reach goal. Keeper Kristen Norkus (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield) recorded eight saves, several in which she had to fly to the ball. Dani Franklin (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Northern) again led the Hollins attack by getting off three shots. Sara Poole (Blue Ridge, VA/Lord Botetourt) added two shots while four other Hollins players were able to get off shots against the Lions. Piedmont was led by Dilyn MacLean's six shots. MacLean was able to beat Norkus after a corner kick late in the first half. Justine Clay scored on a long shot after taking a pass from Kristen Murri. Hollins will head back out on the road on Wednesday when they travel to Winston-Salem to face Salem College.
