Hollins Can't Stop Marlins Run

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Soccer vs Virginia Wesleyan College September 24, 2011

Box Score

On an overcast Saturday afternoon, Hollins hosted Virginia Wesleyan College on the grass of Moody Field.  It marked only the second home contest for Hollins, who came in looking for their first ODAC win of the season.  The undefeated, 10-0, Marlins controlled the action early and took the lead when they scored about 12 minutes into the matchup.  Virginia Wesleyan used their deep bench to keep the pressure on throughout the first half and took a 4-0 lead into the break.  In the second half, Hollins was able to get a nice scoring chance after a Marlin foul gave them an opportunity to set up a play towards the net.  Dani Franklin (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Northern) sent a high arching pass over the Marlin defenders and Erica Smith (Louisa Co., VA/Louisa Co.) was able to get a clean header but the ball rolled just wide giving Hollins their best scoring chance of the game.  The Marlins were able to regroup and found the net again a short time later.  Wesleyan scored two more late goals to make the final score 7-0.

Hollins was able to get a couple of good scoring chances in addition to the Smith header.  Kelli Kitchens (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) got off three shots, with two being on net, but couldn't beat the VWC keepers.  Kristen Norkus (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield), fresh off a 13 save effort at Roanoke, recorded 18 saves for the home team.

Caitlyn Bishop came off the bench to score three times for the visitors.  Christina Fernandes, Bre Ingargiola, Krista Witmer, and Brittini Dennis each added individual goals for the Marlins who improved to 3-0 in league play.

Hollins will travel to Emory & Henry for a game against the Wasps on Wednesday night.  The match is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.
