Hollins Defeats ODAC Rival Sweet Briar

Sweet Briar, VA - Hollins University Soccer at Sweet Briar College, October 9, 2013

Box Score

Wednesday night saw the annual meeting of ODAC rivals as Hollins traveled to Sweet Briar for their much anticipated soccer game.  Hollins came into the matchup looking for their second conference win in order to move one step closer towards gaining a berth to the season ending ODAC Tournament while Sweet Briar was looking for their first conference win of the season.

After having to postpone their game against Bluefield College due to weather, Hollins took the field for the first time since a home loss to Washington and Lee last Tuesday.  Hollins got just what they were looking for by scoring the games first goal less than six minutes after the opening kick.  Dani Franklin (Chesapeake Beach, MD) beat the Vixen keeper to give Hollins a quick 1-0 lead.  20 minutes later Hollins added to their lead when leading scorer Becca Logan (Culloden, WV) once again put the visitors on the board and they carried the 2-0 lead into the halftime break. Hollins dominated play in the Sweet Briar zone and enjoyed a 10-2 shot lead during the first half.

Both teams had settled in and the opening stages of the second frame was evenly played.  At the 60 minute mark, Hollins enjoyed another quality scoring chance.  Logan once again got loose behind the Vixen defense and hammered a shot into the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.  A little later in the half, Hollins made their lone mistake of the game as the ball got behind the Hollins keeper.  The 3-1 score held up as Hollins came away with a much needed win over their rivals.

Logan netted a pair of goals on five shots and Ashton Holliday (Lewisburg, WV) added three shots.  Franklin scored her second goal and eighth point of the season.  Megan McKee (Madison, AL) stooped three Sweet Briar shots in picking up the win in goal.

Hollins will go for two in a row as they play host to Randolph College on Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm.  With a win over the WildCats, Hollins would be in position to secure berth in the ODAC Tournament.
