Late Goal Not Enough For Hollins

Cary, NC - Hollins University Soccer at William Peace University September 8, 2013

Box Score

The Hollins University soccer team was back in action 24 hours after picking up their first win of the season.  After winning at Warren Wilson yesterday, Hollins looked to make it two in a row as the prepared to battle William Peace University on Sunday afternoon.

The Hollins offense found its rhythm against the Owls and they were looking to build on that momentum against the Pacers.  However, neither team could get much going in the early stages of the matchup.  The score remained scoreless for the first 30 minutes of the game until the home team started to put some pressure on Hollins.  William Peace enjoyed a 9-2 shot advantage during the first half and finally put one behind the Hollins keeper to take a 1-0 lead.  Five minutes later the Pacers again went on the attack, scoring their second goal of the game and took the lead into the break.

The second half saw less offense than the first with neither team being able to crack their opponents defense.  With about 10 minutes to go the game looked like a lost cause until Maran O'Neill (Bedford, VA) netted her first goal of the season to give Hollins hope.  The Pacers packed their defensive zone for the final minutes of the game and held on for the 2-1 victory.

The goal for O'Neill gives the senior three points for the season, tied for third on the team.  Ashton Holliday (Lewisburg, VA) picked up her first collegiate assist one day after scoring her first goal.  O'Neill and Becca Logan (Culloden, WV) led the Hollins offense in shots on goal.  Megan McKee (Madison, AL) went the distance in goal, recording a pair of saves.

Mercedes Sanderson scored both goals for William Peace.  Andrea Enterline and Shannon Maddex combined for the win in goal.

Hollins will have a couple of days off before opening conference play.  Virginia Wesleyan comes to town on Saturday for a 3:00pm start and the game can be seen live on First Team Broadcasting.
