Royals Fend Off Hollins

Roanoke, NC - Hollins University Soccer vs Eastern Mennonite University, September 28, 2013

Box Score

After picking up their first conference win of the season, a 2-1 win at Guilford on Tuesday night, the Hollins soccer team hosted Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon.  Hollins was looking to move past the Royals in the standings as both teams came into the game tied with one ODAC win apiece.

Hollins came into the matchup with the confidence that they had beaten the Royals last season, but to repeat that performance, Hollins must contend with a team that came in with a 6-2 mark on the season.  The early stages of the match saw both teams get great scoring opportunities.  Each team had multiple shots hit the posts as the match remained scoreless in the first 10 minutes.  At about the 15 minute mark, it was Eastern Mennonite that got on the board first to take the early lead.  About 15 minutes later, the Royals again found the back of the Hollins net to push the lead to 2-0.  The home team had a couple of scoring chances late but each time the Royals turned the shots aside and led 2-0 at the break.

Hollins came out in the second half and took the fight to Eastern Mennonite.  Just five minutes into the second stanza, Hollins finally broke through and cut the lead to 2-1.  Dani Franklin (Chesapeake Beach, MD) feathered a pass through the Royals defense to a waiting Becca Logan (Culloden, WV) and Hollins leading scorer beat the keeper for the goal.  Hollins immediately had a chance to tie the game but the breakaway shot by Ashton Holliday (Lewisburg, WV) sailed just wide of the Eastern Mennonite net.  The Royals took advantage of the missed Hollins opportunity and over the next 10 minutes of play, added a pair of goals to put the match our of reach.  A late penalty shot by the Royals made the final score 5-1 and ended Hollins chance at a second straight ODAC win.

Logan and Holliday combined to record seven shots.  Keeper Megan McKee (Madison, AL) made several sliding and diving saves en route to posting 11 saves on the afternoon.  The Franklin assist was her team leading fourth of the season.

Elisa Ott netted a hat trick for Eastern Mennonite.  Kendall Moyer scored the game's initial goal while Morgan Hill added a goal and an assist.  Becca Borg recorded a pair of saves on her way to picking up the win in net.

The season doesn't get an easier for Hollins as they play host to perennial ODAC power Washington and Lee on Tuesday afternoon.
