Showdown Goes Way Of The Vixens

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Swimming vs. Sweet Briar College, January 20, 2014

The Hollins University swim team entered the final week of their regular season on Monday night as ODAC rival Sweet Briar College came to Roanoke for their annual showdown.  After facing the Vixens, Hollins will travel to Greensboro on Friday before returning home to host a tri-meet in their regular season finale.

Hollins entered the pool against the Vixens with a short handed roster that had just competed on back to back days less than 48 hours before Monday night's meet.  With many swimmers taking to the pool in back to back events, Hollins would need to set several personal bests to stay with a Sweet Briar team that came into the matchup looking to put some distance between themselves and their biggest rivals.  Sweet Briar used a deep and talented roster to come away with a 39-147 victory.

Rachel Hertzler (Toano, VA) represented Hollins in the longest event of the meet, the 1000 Freestyle, and came home with third place points to start the meet.  Meg O'Brien (Chattanooga, TN) added a third place finish in the 200 Freestyle.  Later in the meet, Ashley Gao (Pearland, TX) continued her solid January with a bronze medal finish in the 50 Freestyle while Grace Iaquinto (Huntington, WV) wrapped up the individual events with a third in the 100 Breaststroke.

Hollins will be on the road on Friday at Greensboro College before returning to Roanoke for a tri-meet on Saturday afternoon.
