2014 Opens With Trip To Bridgewater

Bridgewater, VA - Hollins University Swimming at Bridgewater College, January 10, 2014

After being out of the pool for a month, the Hollins swim team opened the new year with a trip to Bridgewater College on Friday night.  The dual meet between the pair of ODAC rivals marked the first time the two would swim head-to-head, having met previously at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in early December.

Bridgewater started off the 11 event meet with a win in the 400 Medley Relay.  The home standing Eagles were able to fend off their visitors for a majority of the meet.  Hollins broke through with wins in the final two events, but it wasn't enough to overcome the lead that Bridgewater had built.  At meet's end it was the Eagles that picked up the win, 130-51.

Rachel Hertzler (Toano, VA) picked up the lone Hollins individual win when she bested the field in the 100 Breaststroke.  Hertzler, a first-year swimmer that was also a member of the volleyball team in the fall, added a pair of fourth place finishes (800 and 400 Freestyle) in addition to her win.

The four swimmer team of Grace Iaquinto (Huntington, WV), Lauren Chin (Montego Bay, Jamaica), Meg O'Brien (Chattanooga, TN), and Hayley Caulfeild-James (Willow Street, PA) brought home first place points in the final event of the meet, the 800 Freestyle Relay.  Earlier in the meet, O'Brien and Caulfeild-James each set Hollins records in two different events.

With a short Hollins roster due to J-term classes and internships, the team will have to recover quickly as they host Notre Dame University of Maryland tomorrow at noon.
