Asip Makes History in Hollins Loss

Lexington, VA - Hollins University Swimming at Virginia Military Institute, December 4, 2012

In their last meet before taking some time off for the Christmas break, Hollins challenged VMI in the pool on Tuesday night.  The last time Hollins stepped out of DIII they came away with a win over NCAA DII Davis and Elkins back in November.  Hollins made history by competing in a diving event for the first time but the Keydets came away with a 73-143 win.

For the first time in ODAC history, a competitor from a conference school scored points in a diving event when Catie Asip (Wellington, FL) took second place in the One Meter Diving event.  According to the league office, it was the first dive in official competition in the history of the ODAC, which was formed in 1983.  In addition to her dive, Asip also brought home third place points in the 100 Butterfly.  The Hollins team of Michelle Douglas (Chesapeake, VA), Somer Lester (Winters, CA), Andrea Guerra (Brownsville, TX), and Sarah Peterson (Arlington, VA) won the 200 Freestyle Relay, Hollins lone individual event victory of the night.  Meg O'Brien (Chattanooga, TN) and Audrey James (Fremont, CA) each recorded a pair of second place finishes.  O'Brien scored runner up points in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Butterfly while James came in second in the 100 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle.  Sage Otto (Hampton, VA) added a second in the 1000 Freestyle and a third in the 200 Individual Medley.

Hollins will be back in the pool after the new year when they face ODAC foe Bridgewater College.  The meet with the Eagles will be held in the Hollins pool on Friday, January 11th.
