Box vs. Methodist

Hollins played host their "Green Invitational" Volleyball Tournament which opened with three matches on Friday afternoon.  Hollins faced ODAC rival Emory & Henry in their tournament opener before playing Methodist University in the nightcap.

Hollins came into their matchup with the Wasps looking to not only start the tournament off with a win, but to send a message to the rest of the ODAC.  The match went back and forth in the first set until finally the visitors pulled away 25-15.  The next two sets saw much of the same and when the final point was scored, Emory & Henry came away with the 3-0 non-conference win.

Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) connected on seven of her 14 kill attempts while leading the way with a pair of service aces.  Setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out 17 helpers and Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) recorded a team high eight digs.

The second match for Hollins saw a rematch of last weeks thrilling five set affair with the Monarchs.  Hollins came in focused on exacting some revenge against Methodist and wasted no time in building a 1-0 lead after the first set.  However, Monarchs didn't allow Hollins to gain the same, 2-0, advantage as before by winning the next two sets and pushing their hosts to the brink of loss.  Hollins was up for the task and after a comeback win the match was tied at 2-2 going into the decisive fifth set.  Hollins grabbed the lead early but couldn't hold on as Methodist again defeated Hollins 3 sets to 2.

Hays again led the offensive attack with 11 kills while Ortiz added nine kills and 16 digs.  Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) enjoyed her best offensive match of the season by adding eight kills and nine digs and Moore handed out 29 assists.

Hollins will look to even their record for the tournament tomorrow when they face St. Mary's College (MD) at 10:30am before playing the event's final match against Virginia Intermont College at 2:30pm.
