Box vs. St. Mary's

Box vs. Va. Intermont

Saturday marked the finale of the two day Hollins Green Invitational Volleyball Tournament.  After failing to pick up a win on day two, Hollins looked to get back on track against St. Mary's College of Maryland and in the finale against Virginia Intermont.

Hollins got off to a quick start in the early morning hours against the Seahawks, taking the lead in the beginning stages of the match.  With the match tied mid-way through the set, St. Mary's went on a run and took the first set, 25-19.  The Seahawks built on their momentum and cruised to a second set win.  With their backs against the wall, Hollins battled St. Mary's tough, but in the end it was their visitors who took the match 3-0.

Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) recorded 10 kills and a pair of service aces while Jordan Persinger (New Castle, VA) added four kills and assisted on five blocks.  Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) assisted on 18 of the teams 22 kills and Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) again led the team with 18 digs.

In the final match of the tournament pitted Hollins against Virginia Intermont College.  The Cobras came into the match on the heels of a tough four set affair with Methodist while Hollins came into the finale well rested.  A fresher Hollins squad was able to race out to a first set lead but VIC used a 14 kill attack to rally and take the lead, 1-0.  The second set was a carbon copy of the first, Hollins leads early before the Cobras struck back and at set's end, it was Virginia Intermont who enjoyed the advantage, 2-0.  In the third set, Hollins found themselves in a big hole before they started a comeback that would fall just short as Va. Intermont held on for the win.

Ortiz posted her best match of the tournament with seven kills, two assists, and 13 digs.  Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) led the way with 15 digs from her Libero position while Hays posted eight kills and two service aces.

Hollins will open ODAC play on Friday when Eastern Mennonite comes to town for a 7:00pm start.  The match can be seen live ont eh web on First Team Broadcasting.
