Hollins Splits a Pair

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Volleyball vs Southern Virginia University and Methodist University, September 29, 2012

vs. Southern Va          vs. Methodist

The Hollins University volleyball team hosted a pair of opponents on Saturday as the three teams played on another in a tri-match.  Southern Virginia University was set to face a Hollins team in the opener as the host squad was looking to break a eight match losing skid.

The Knights struck first taking a hard fought first set 25-21.  Hollins used a 12 kill effort to even the match at a set apiece after taking the second stanza 25-22.  The home team took their first lead in several matches when they bested Southern Virginia 25-19 in the third.  Hollins jumped out to a quick lead as they were looking to take the match.  Hollins built the lead and went on take the fourth set, 25-17, and the match.

Haley Ortiz (Chesapeake, VA) recorded 12 of Hollins 42 kills during the match.  Ortiz added four service aces and 15 digs while Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) chipped in with 10 kills and 12 service aces.  Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) led Hollins with 34 assists while Libero Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) had a team high 17 digs.

Hollins looked to complete the sweep later in the afternoon when they took on Methodist University.  The Monarchs came into the match after having just beaten Southern Virginia 3-0.

Methodist wasted no time in racing out to an early lead against their host and cruised to a 25-14 opening set victory.  Hollins traded points with the Monarchs for much of the second set before seeing Methodist pull away late, 25-22, to take a 2-0 lead.  Hollins wasn't finished as they turned the tables on their visitors from Fayetteville and took the third frame 25-22 to stave off the Monarchs.  The rally was short lived as Methodist took the match with a fourth set win, 25-15.

Ally Reed (Sterling, VA) and Hays led the Hollins offense with 19 and 10 kills respectively.  Hays added five blocks and six digs while Ortiz recorded seven kills, 11 digs, and four service aces while Moore again led Hollins with 34 assists.

Hollins will look to build on their momentum when they travel across town to face Roanoke College on Wednesday night.  The ODAC match with the Maroons is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm.
