Hollins Opens Season on the Road |

Hollins started the 2011 season with a trip to Christopher Newport on Thursday night. The young Hollins team was thrown to the fire early, facing the fourth ranked Captains in their season opener. The home team took command of the match from the beginning and took the first set 25-10. Hollins, with five first year players in their rotation, improved throughout the match but fell 25-12 and 25-11 in the next two sets. Ally Reed (Sterling, VA/Dominion) led the young squad with 17 digs. Reed also recorded four kills on 19 attacks. Simone Mendez (Gardena, CA/St. Bernard) also recorded four kills as did first year hitter Mandi McDade (Eustis, FL/Eustis). McDade added five digs and a service ace. First year setter Jessie Deese (Cary, NC/Apex) led the team with 17 assists. Christopher Newport recorded 38 kills during the match led by Chelsea McClure (8) and Cory Harris (7). Setter Jessie Heavenrich handed out 30 assists while Abby Hogge led the way with 15 digs. Hollins will stay in the Virginia Beach area for a tournament on Friday and Saturday. Hollins will compete four times over the next two days in the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational. |
