Box score vs Goucher

After a couple of weeks worth of individual matches, Hollins traveled to Baltimore for a tournament on Friday night.  Hollins opened up with Frostburg before facing the host Gophers on the first night of the Goucher Invitational tournament.

In their first match of the tournament, Hollins faced Frostburg State and wasted no time in taking the first set, 25-22.  Frostburg battled back in the second set and behind double digit kills evened the match at a set apiece.  Having watch a match slip away earlier in the week, Hollins learned from their errors and dug in for the long haul.  Hollins took the third set, 25-20, and didn't let the opportunity get away as Hollins took the fourth set, 25-16, and the match, 3-1.

Outside hitter Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) led the Hollins attack with 14 kills on 35 attempts.  Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) recorded six kills and eight digs while setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) completed a solid all-around effort with five kills, 25 assists, seven digs, and a pair of service aces.  Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) came up with 15 digs and Emily Lowther (Woodbridge, VA) added 14.

In the nightcap Hollins challenged host Goucher College in hopes of starting the tournament with a pair of victories.  The first set saw both teams hold early leads but as the set came down the stretch it was the Gophers that pulled away and held on for a 25-20 opening set win.  Hollins started to show signs of fatigue as their hosts took the second set, 25-16.  Gaining their second wind gave Hollins life as they took the lead in the third set.  However, Goucher battled back to take the set, 25-22, and the match.

Deese again recorded 14 kills with Martinez adding five and Moore four.  Moore again led the team with 28 assists and Ortiz got to a team high 14 digs.

Hollins will try to improve on their record with a pair of matches tomorrow.  Hollins will start the day with Lebanon Valley before playing their finale against Washington College.
