Two Up, Two Down at Roanoke Tournament

The Hollins volleyball team took a break from ODAC league play to compete in the Roanoke College Tournament in Friday and Saturday.  Hollins took on UVa Wise and Averett University on Friday evening before finishing up with Ferrum College and Randolph on Saturday afternoon.

Hollins started the tournament by knocking off UVa Wise by the final score of 3-1.  Ally Reed (Sterling, VA) and Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) got the Hollins offense off to a quick start by posting 14 and 13 kills respectively.  Emily Lowther (Woodbridge, VA) served three of the eight Hollins service aces.  Reed led the with 10 digs while Lowther and Hays both blocked three Wise attacks.

In their second match, Hollins looked to avenge an earlier loss to Averett at the Cougar Classic back in September.  This time around Hollins got off to a quick start taking the first set 26-24, however it wasn't enough as the Cougars picked up a second win this season over Hollins 3-1.  Reed and Hays again led the Hollins attack with nine apiece.  Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) helped on 23 of the Hollins 29 kills and Reed again led Hollins in digs with 15.

On Saturday morning Hollins looked to pick up their second win of the event when they faced Ferrum College at 10am.  The Panthers took the first set with a comfortable 25-13 win.  Hollins battled back and took the second set into extra points before prevailing 28-26 to even the match.  Hollins took the third set and looked to finish off the Panthers in the fourth but it wasn't to be as Ferrum took the fourth 25-19 to force a fifth and decisive set.  Hollins was able to win the race to 15 points and finished off the Panthers 15-12 in the finale.  Hays and Haley Ortiz (Chesapeake, VA) each recorded 10 kills while Reed added nine and Amelia Eyles (Millwood, VA) eight.  Moore handed out 38 assists while Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) led with 24 digs.  Ortiz served five aces while Moore added three and Hays blocked six Panther attacks, four in solo fashion.

Hollins looked to down the WildCats of Randolph int eh afternoon to come out with a winning record for the tournament.  Hollins will face Randolph in ODAC action later this month as the match-up in the tournament was not considered a league match.  The first set was a back and forth battled with the WildCats coming out with the slimmest of 25-23 wins.  Set two was nothing like the thrilling opener as Rondolph cruised 25-9 and then finished off the sweep with a third set victory, 25-23.  Hays (12) and Reed (10) again led the Hollins attack.  Moored recorded 13 assists and Reed led the way with 17 digs.

Hollins will be back in ODAC action on Wednesday when they play host to Eastern Mennonite.  The match with the Royals is set to start at 6:30pm.
