Marlins Prove Unfriendly Hosts

Virginia Beach, VA - Hollins University Volleyball at Virginia Wesleyan College September 14, 2012

Box Score

After competing in a pair of tournaments to start the season, Hollins opened conference play with a trip to Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday night.  The Marlins came into the match off a perfect 4-0 trip to Roanoke last weekend for the Hollins Invitational while Hollins came in riding a two match losing streak.

The host Marlins wasted no time in jumping out to an early lead.  Hollins, still weary from the long trip, battled but fell 25-19 int he opening set.  The second set was no closer as Virginia Wesleyan recorded double digit kills en route to taking the set 25-13.  Hollins took an early 3-2 lead in the third set but the advantage was short lived as the Marlins stormed back.  Hollins mounted a rally late but it wasn't enough as VWC took the third set and the match.

Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) led the visitors with 17 assists.  Ally Reed (Sterling, VA) posted team highs with seven kills and six digs.  Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) added three kills, three service aces, and two blocks.

Virginia Wesleyan enjoyed a 38-18 advantage in kills led by Kayla Guy with 13.  Taylor recorded seven kills while Kerry Johnson and Tempe Martens added six kills each.  Setter Mallory Slade handed out a match high 32 assists and Torey Garin blocked five Hollins attacks.

Hollins will stay the night on the coast before stopping at Randolph-Macon tomorrow.  The match with the Yellow Jackets is scheduled to start at 11:00am.
