Eagles Get Past Hollins

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Volleyball vs Bridgewater College, September 14, 2013

Box score

With a turnaround of less than 14 hours, the Hollins volleyball team was back in action early Saturday morning.  After dropping a four set affair with Eastern Mennonite, Hollins had to be prepare to face Bridgewater College.  The Eagles brought a 2-0 ODAC mark into the matchup against a weary Hollins squad looking for their first conference win of the season.

As could be expected, Hollins started off a bit slow and the visitors from Bridgewater took advantage quickly in the first set.  Behind 15 kills, the Eagles took the first set 25-14.  The second set again saw Bridgewater enjoy an early advantage but Hollins began to find their legs and went on a roll and late in the set the score was tied at 23-23.  Bridgewater capitalized on their opportunities late and came away with a hard fought 25-23 second set victory.  Hollins was not done, as they started the third stanza with a 10-5 lead.  The Eagles righted themselves and slow crept back into the set until they tied it up at the midway point.  From then on out it was all Bridgewater as they came into Roanoke and left with a perfect 3-0 ODAC mark.

Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) and Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) each recorded six kills to lead Hollins at the net.  Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out 15 assists while Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) led the back line with eight digs.  Hays and Moore combined for three of Hollins six blocks for the match.

Bridgewater used a 44-21 advantage in kills to help lead them to the 3-0 victory.  Rachel Donaldson led the way with 13 kills while Megann Grimes added 11 and Katie Long 10.  Setter Lindsay Kallam dished out 33 helpers and along with Abby Mills led the team with 13 digs.

Hollins will step out of conference on Tuesday when they travel north on Interstate 81 to face Southern Virginia University.  The match with the Knights is scheduled to start at 6:00pm.
