Cross Town Showdown Goes to Roanoke

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Volleyball vs Roanoke College October 25, 2011

Box Score

Tuesday night marked the final home match of the season for a Hollins volleyball team that was competing as a full member of the ODAC for the first time in seven years.  Hollins came in looking to pick up another conference win and get one step closer to qualifying for the ODAC Tournament.  Hollins raced out to an early lead in the first set.  With Hollins leading 20-15, Roanoke mounted a rally and outscored the home team 10-2 to take the first set by the score of 25-22.  The second set again saw Hollins take the lead and again the Maroons stormed back to take the set by the same 25-22 score as the first.  Even a short break couldn't cool off Roanoke as the visitors took the third set and the match.

Mandi McDade (Eustis, FL/Eustis) led the Hollins attack with seven kills.  Ally Reed (Sterling, VA/Dominion) added six kills and tied McDade with 19 digs.  Jessie Deese (Cary, NC/Apex) handed out a team high 14 assists.  Prior to the match, Hollins senior Simone Mendez (Gardena, CA/St. Bernard) was honored by her coaches, teammates, and fans.  It marked the final home match for Mendez who has been instrumental in the rebirth of the Hollins volleyball program.

Samantha Klostermann helped to led Roanoke to a 44-21 kill advantage by recording a match high 12 kills.  Sarah Long added nine while Kelsey Largen and Rachel Hawkins each killed eight.  Shannon Stone had a stellar assist night with a match high 36.

Hollins will finish their regular season on the road this Saturday when they travel to Salem College.
