Hollins Can't Catch Marlins

The Hollins volleyball team was back defending their home court on Saturday afternoon.  Hollins hosted ODAC foe Virginia Wesleyan College looking to get back in the win column.  The Marlins came into the match with a pair of ODAC wins and sitting just ahead of Hollins in the conference standings.

Virginia Wesleyan started off the match by taking an early lead.  Hollins rallied and pulled to within one point, 15-16, midway through the first set.  However, the visitors ended the set on a 9-3 run to take the opener 25-18.  During the second frame, Hollins had a couple of players have to miss some time with minor injuries and their visitors took full advantage.  The Marlins cruised to a 25-12 second set win.  Trailing in the third set and the match, Hollins mounted a rally.  After winning three straight points on the serve of Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX), Hollins found themselves down 18-19.  Both teams traded points but in the end it was the Marlins that came away with the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.

Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) led Hollins by recording 10 of the team's 26 kills with Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) adding seven kills and a pair of blocks.  Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out a team high 17 assists to go with her three kills and six digs.  Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) led with 19 digs while Martinez added three kills and five digs.

Virginia Wesleyan was led at the net by Tempe Martens and her 11 kills.  Setters Kirstin Sessoms and Amberlyn Daglian combined to dish out 35 assists and Libero Marin Crowder recorded a team high 21 digs.

Hollins will be back in ODAC action on Tuesday night when they play host to Shenandoah University at 6:30pm.
