Master of Arts in Teaching

Licensure-only program

Hollins University’s graduate program in education offers a program for the college graduate who wants to obtain licensure without pursuing a master of arts in teaching degree. Licensure qualifies you to teach in Virginia as well as in other states.

To apply

Students seeking admission to the licensure-only program must have completed an undergraduate major in a liberal arts or sciences discipline (or the equivalent) at a regionally accredited college or university. The applicant must submit an application; $40 processing fee; passing PRAXIS I scores or an acceptable substitute (sufficient ACT or SAT scores); official college transcript(s) reflecting a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5; three letters of recommendation from professors or from employers who can attest to your ability to pursue teaching licensure; and a personal statement indicating your reasons for wanting to teach.

Requirements for completion

You and the director of education programs will meet to determine your course of study. The length of your program depends on the courses you need in order to meet Virginia requirements for a teaching license and on the rate at which you are able to take classes. After reviewing your transcript, the director of education programs will apprise you of the courses you need for the area in which you would like to be licensed. The average length of time it takes for licensure is three to four semesters, which includes coursework and student teaching. Most courses are taught during evenings at times compatible with the average working person’s schedule.

Fees and Financial Aid

For the academic year 2012-13, the cost is $340 per credit hour. You are eligible to apply for financial aid, provided you are taking a minimum of two courses per term.
