Hollins Wins Record 19th ODAC Riding Championship; Poole Qualifies for IHSA Nationals

The Hollins University riding team won all three rounds of competition at the 2013 ODAC Equestrian Championships to capture an ODAC-record 19th conference riding championship and the team’s third title in four years.

During the event held at the Sweet Briar College Riding Center on Friday, April 5, Sarah Brown ’13 recorded the highest individual average and won ODAC Rider of the Year honors, the fourth straight year a Hollins rider has earned the title. In addition, Hollins head coach Sandy Gerald received his seventh ODAC Coach of the Year award.

Here are the final team standings from the event:

1. Hollins                                                                               21 points
2. Washington and Lee                                                          13 points
3. Sweet Briar                                                                      12 points
4. Randolph                                                                         11 points
5. Bridgewater                                                                      5 points
6. Lynchburg                                                                         4 points

Brown, Blair St. Ledger-Olson ’13, and Lindsley Fletcher ’13 were subsequently named to the All-ODAC Riding Team.

On Saturday, April 6, at the IHSA Zone 4 Finals held at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, North Carolina, Emma Lane Poole ’13 (third from left in the photo above, along with Hollins Riding Center Associate Director Liz Courter, Coach Gerald, and Riding Center Director Nancy Peterson)  qualified to compete at the 2013 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championships in Open Equitation over Fences. IHSA Nationals will take place May 2-5 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pa.
