Hollins University will host the first Hollins Spring Welcome Horse Show at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, February 27 – March 2.
The event, established by Southern Seminary Junior College, was sponsored by Virginia Intermont College from 1999 through 2013. The Hollins Spring Welcome Horse Show is a United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) “A” rated hunter and jumper event. Hollins is only the second college or university currently hosting a National “A” show within the USEF, and the first women’s college to do so.
“Being able to have this event at the Virginia Horse Center is a chance to bring Hollins Riding to a new level,” said Nancy Peterson, director of the Hollins Riding Center. “It seems to have brought our program together in many ways with students (who will be helping with the actual running of the show), alumnae, and the community.”
“We attract 400 horses – a large show, especially for the time of year and location,” added Leslie Brown, who works with show management at the Virginia Horse Center. “We have classes for all levels of riders and horses, from professionals to the youngest Short Stirrup rider. The hunter and jumper horse show is the one sport I know of where men, women, boys, and girls compete on an equal basis.”
Brown noted that due to the great interest in intercollegiate team riding, Southern Seminary instituted a feature class to showcase college riders. The Hollins Spring Welcome Horse Show will continue the tradition of the “Collegiate Cup.”
“Teams of riders from colleges and secondary schools will compete on the flat and over fences,” she explained, “and this year’s winning team will receive, courtesy of the International Riding Helmet Company, a helmet for each rider.”
