Hollins University is augmenting communication between the campus community and the university security department this fall by becoming the first women’s college in the nation to launch the
LiveSafe mobile safety app.
LiveSafe enables students, faculty, and staff to directly and seamlessly report a broad range of safety issues. The technology includes an app for smartphone users that is connected to an online dashboard monitored by Hollins security officials. It is designed to help prevent, and allow better response to, incidents on campus.
Features of the LiveSafe app include:
- Quick tip submittal via text with picture and video attachments (including the option to remain anonymous).
- Live chat with security officials.
- Fast access to emergency phone numbers that initiate location tracking when dialed.
- A comprehensive safety map that pinpoints incidents on or near campus.
- Peer-to-peer location monitoring with a concurrent group chat feature.
In addition, app users can receive important broadcast notifications from the university security department.
“LiveSafe is an excellent communication tool that fits in perfectly with students’ lifestyles in their mobile technology-driven worlds,” says Hollins Chief Information Officer Carol Reed. “We are excited about making this available to all our students, faculty, and staff, and as a result creating a closer campus.”
The Hollins University community can download the LiveSafe app for free on iPhone and Android devices from iTunes or Google Play.
Co-founded by a survivor of the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech, LiveSafe, Inc., is advised by current and former law enforcement officials and its technology is in use at a number of other colleges and universities, including Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University, James Madison University, Old Dominion University, and Virginia Wesleyan College.
