Elizabeth O Dulemba

Director, Graduate Programs in Children's Literature and Illustration

Elizabeth O Dulemba Elizabeth Dulemba

“Dr. e” is an award-winning illustrator, author, teacher, blogger, and speaker (including her popular TED Talk “Is Your Stuff Stopping You”). Readers can enjoy her three-dozen books, including the illustrated novel, A Bird on Water Street, awarded Georgia Author of the Year, or her most recent picture books as illustrator, written by New York Times Best-selling author Jane Yolen, with whom she often collaborates. In her hometown of Atlanta, she spent six years supporting local creators as illustrator coordinator for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators southeast region and as a board member for the Georgia Center for the Book. In 2015, she and her late husband moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, where she achieved an M.F.A. in illustration and Ph.D. in children’s literature. Winthrop University offered her a position as associate professor of illustration that brought her back to the states; but the Appalachian Mountains were calling. After teaching Picture Book Design at Hollins University every summer for 10 years, she recently moved to Roanoke, Virginia, full time to take up the director position, to help expand the graduate programs to year-round degree offerings, and to launch further exciting endeavors. Research Interests

  • Dr. e likes to stay busy. With a brain like a pinball machine, she doesn’t do idle well. Her Ph.D. was a deep dive into the mysterious, titled “Tricksters, Witches, and Warriors: A Feminist Experiment in Rewriting a Patriarchal Narrative in Children’s Fantasy Literature.” It was a beast of a dissertation that was accompanied by a novel-in-progress and followed by articles and conference presentations. Meanwhile, she’s working on a picture book illustrated with ballpoint pen (just for fun) and is under contract for a workbook for creators and industry professionals titled The Art of Children’s Picture Books: Illustration and design for storytelling (due out October 2025 from Bloomsbury Publishing UK).
