In January, Old Dominion University conferred the Hugo L. Owens-Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Award on Jane Parke Batten ’58. Each year ODU selects someone from the Hampton Roads community who has shown commitment to helping the disadvantaged. Batten was the first non-African American to be honored with the award. She recently pledged up to $1.5 million to help aid Saint Paul’s College, a historically African American private college located in Lawrenceville, Virginia.
