Alumnae Connections
Alumnae referrals raced past goals
Goal: 300 | Total: 320
This past academic year, the offices of admission and alumnae relations challenged alumnae to refer 300 high school students. Alumnae surpassed that goal with a total of 320 referrals, compared to last year’s total of 244 referrals. Sharing a name of a high school student with Hollins is critical for the strength of the classes of 2020, 2021, and beyond. Of the students who will enroll in the class of 2019:
- 10 percent of class of 2019 were referred by alumnae
- 50 percent of referred and admitted students enrolled
RACE TO REUNION
Classes having reunions this year were invited to Race to Reunion, competing with each other to refer the most students. The prize for the winning class, 1985, was a Hollins beach towel for each classmate at reunion. The two standouts were Lisa Bower ’05, M.F.A. ’07, who referred 27 students, and Norm Ash ’00, who referred 17.
Final class standings:
1985 = 50
2005 = 39
2000 = 26
1990 = 13
1995 = 6
2013 = 4
1965 = 3
1960 = 2
1955 = 2
1950 and 1975 = 1
COMMONWEALTH CHALLENGE
As part of the overall alumnae referral challenge, we asked our Virginia alumnae chapters to band together and refer a total of 100 new high school students. Yes, Virginia, there is power in numbers:

Ambassador of the month
Honoring donors of time and talent
Financial gifts are important to keep Hollins thriving. But gifts of time and talent are equally beneficial—and valued. The Hollins Ambassadors Circle was designed to honor the extraordinary and exemplary commitment given by alumnae/i, parents, and friends.
The volunteer recognition society acknowledges those who give their expertise to Hollins for the Alumnae Engagement Initiative through:
- connecting with alumnae and classmates
- career preparation and internships for students
- referring and recruiting prospective students
- encouraging others to support Hollins through philanthropic gifts
Ambassadors receive a ribbon to wear at reunion and are listed on our website, www.hollins.edu/alumnae. Each month we highlight a volunteer who is a member of the Hollins Ambassadors Circle on the website and on social media.
The Ambassador of the Month for June was not just one volunteer, but an entire team. The class of 1975 reunion team, Suzanne Hughes Detlefs, Cindy Hortman Meeker, Rena Henderson, and Cynthia Hale, spent a year building excitement among their classmates for their 40th reunion and class gift. Their work resulted in 41 members of the class attending reunion weekend and 31 percent of the class contributing to the class gift of $139,858 for the Hollins Fund.
