Calling all aspiring theatre enthusiasts in grades 9-12! Are you ready to bring stories to life through costumes and props? Join us this summer for an unforgettable adventure in theatrical costume design and prop crafting!

Residential: $1,150
Day (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.): $550

Unleash Your Creativity

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll dive into two exciting realms of theatre crafts:

  1. Costume Creation Workshop: Our expert costume technologist will guide you through:
    • Introductory sewing techniques for theatre costumes
    • Working with various fabrics and materials
    • Basic pattern reading
  2. Theatre Props Crafting Adventure: Create unique and functional props for the stage. Our resident props master will teach you:
    • Fundamentals of lightweight prop design for theatre
    • Painting methods for stage props
    • Cardboard construction techniques

You’ll work in small groups, alternating between costume creation and props crafting. By the end, you’ll have the skills to visualize and bring to life your costume and prop creations using sewing and crafting techniques.

Visiting Professor of Costume Technology and Costume Shop Manager, Hollins University
  • Costuming professional with ten years of experience in professional theatre
  • Active member of IATSE with Local 55
  • Has worked with organizations including The University of Lynchburg, The Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Endstation Theatre Company, and The American Shakespeare Center
Arne Johnson
Resident Scenic and Props Designer/Crafter, Hollins University
  • Veteran theatre professional with over 35 years of experience in props, scene shops, and design studios
  • Accomplished scenic sculptor specializing in large carved forms and specialty construction projects
  • Has worked at various theatres including Tantrum Theatre (Ohio), Pacific Conservatory Theatre (PCPA) and SLO Rep Theatre (California), and Utah Opera
  • Holds a BA in Studio Art and Sculpture from Humboldt University and an MFA in Studio Art (Sculpture and Digital Media) from the University of California, Santa Barbara
